Fire Safety Tips for Park Visitors
The San Antonio Fire Department is urging caution for those planning to barbecue in parks over the holiday weekend. Important fire safety measures include:
Grill Safety: Never leave a lit grill unattended and keep children and pets away. Do not attempt to move a hot grill.
Charcoal Starter Fluid: Only use designated charcoal starter fluid. Never add more starter fluid or flammable liquids once the fire starts to dwindle. A charcoal chimney starter is recommended.
Proper Clothing: Ensure clothing, especially shirt tails, sleeves, and apron strings, does not dangle over the grill.
Grease Fires: In the event of a grease fire, do not use water. For charcoal grills without lids, call 911 immediately. For gas grills, turn off the gas, close the lid (if safe to do so), and call 911.
Charcoal Grill Disposal: After use, allow coals to cool, safely dispose of ashes, and clean the grill to prevent future fire hazards.
Ash Disposal: Cool ashes should be wrapped in foil and never placed in recycling bins.
