The Newry and Mourne Museum is set to participate in this year’s National Drawing Day, a prominent annual event that encourages individuals to explore their artistic abilities through various drawing activities. Scheduled for Saturday, May 17, the event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering a series of engaging workshops for participants of all ages.
Local artists Anna-Marie Savage and Mark O’Neill will facilitate the workshops, which include still-life sketching sessions using items from the Museum’s handling collection, as well as life-drawing classes for participants over the age of 10. For younger attendees, a communal drawing project centered on “the street where we live” will provide an interactive and creative outlet.
Councillor Pete Byrne, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, expressed his excitement about the event, noting, “This event is a wonderful opportunity for young people to engage with the Museum’s collection and create their own wonderful piece of art. Not only that, but they will be mentored by renowned local artists.”
Anna-Marie Savage, a contemporary visual artist based in Omeath, holds a Fine Art degree from the Belfast School of Art, University of Ulster. She has participated in numerous exhibitions across Ireland. Mark O’Neill, who graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Liverpool University, has exhibited his work in New York, Liverpool, London, Dublin, Belfast, and Newry.
National Drawing Day, held every May, aims to promote creativity and inspire individuals to connect with their artistic side, and this year’s event at the Newry and Mourne Museum promises to be a vibrant and inclusive celebration of art.
