Mixed Reviews for Hadrian’s Wall, with Some Visitors Disappointed by Its Deterioration

by Evelyn

Hadrian’s Wall, one of Britain’s most iconic historical landmarks, continues to captivate visitors more than 1,900 years after its construction. Built in AD 122, the wall once marked the northernmost boundary of the Roman Empire and remains a significant tourist attraction, drawing more than 750,000 visitors to the surrounding Hadrian’s Wall Country in 2024 alone.

While many visitors are awestruck by the site’s rich history and scenic beauty, a small number have expressed disappointment with its current state. Among them, a particularly vocal Tripadvisor reviewer shared their disillusionment, comparing the wall unfavorably to other monumental structures such as the Great Wall of China.

“I decided to visit this wall after reading magnificent reviews,” the visitor wrote. “I was expecting to find a wall on par with the likes of the Great Wall of China or Berlin’s wall, but I was disappointed to find that this wall is a bit c***.”

The reviewer went on to criticize the wall’s deterioration, noting that sections were “falling down” and lamenting the lack of apparent maintenance. They even observed a sheep crossing over the wall into Scotland, further contributing to their negative impression of the site.

“This is the most underwhelming experience of a non-wall I have ever had the misfortune of coming across,” they concluded, before recommending alternative Roman ruins in Rome.

In a similar vein, another visitor took issue with the natural obstacles surrounding the site, particularly the presence of sheep dung on the path leading to the Housesteads Roman Fort. The visitor suggested that more staff should be hired to address the problem, although they acknowledged that it could be a seasonal issue.

Despite these critiques, the overwhelming majority of visitors have shared positive experiences, praising the site’s historical significance and breathtaking views. “This is a truly spectacular site with great views along the remnants of the wall,” one reviewer noted. “It’s a very relaxed site to wander around and get a true feel for what it would have been like to be stationed at the end of the known world. Recommended.”

Others highlighted the wall’s enduring historical importance, with one visitor encouraging others to explore the area: “Get in your car and go visit one of the wonders of the ancient world.”

Hadrian’s Wall continues to draw visitors from across the globe, with many appreciating its unique blend of history, nature, and archaeological significance. The site remains a must-see for anyone interested in the legacy of Roman Britain, despite a few complaints from those with higher expectations.
