Herschend, the privately-owned company behind Dollywood, has announced the acquisition of more than 20 regional attractions across the United States, further expanding its portfolio of family entertainment venues. The acquisition includes a mix of family entertainment centers, hotels, campgrounds, water parks, and historic amusement parks, such as Dutch Wonderland in Pennsylvania, Kennywood in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, and Lake Compounce in Connecticut—known as “America’s First Amusement Park.”
The newly acquired attractions are located in 10 states across the U.S., solidifying Herschend’s standing as the largest family-led themed attractions company globally. “This year, we’re celebrating 75 years of bringing families closer together—and looking ahead to the next 75,” said Andrew Wexler, CEO of Herschend. “Today’s announcement marks a natural expansion and continuation of that vision. By growing wisely and staying true to our purpose, we are building a future where we can continue creating memories worth repeating for generations to come.”
The acquisition strengthens Herschend’s already impressive portfolio, which includes its flagship properties, Dollywood and Silver Dollar City Parks & Resorts, as well as Kentucky Kingdom, which recently unveiled a new $11 million family-friendly land, set to open in May. The company also operates aquariums, resorts, and other immersive attractions, collectively drawing over 20 million guests annually.
While the deal will not immediately alter operations or guest experiences, Herschend stated it aims to maintain consistency across its attractions and provide training and career opportunities for new employees. The company emphasizes its “people-first approach” as it integrates these new properties into its expanding empire.
