A popular seafront funfair in Essex is set to significantly expand by acquiring the site of a neighbouring, now-defunct attraction. Fantasy Island, located on the Eastern Esplanade in Canvey Island, will take over the derelict land previously occupied by Leisure Island, which ceased operations earlier this year.
Leisure Island, owned by Scott Petty, closed its doors in February following two decades of operation. The site, which had seen a challenging year marked by personal tragedy and a devastating fire, will now be revitalized under new ownership. Petty’s son, Charley, tragically passed away in 2024 after a four-year battle with cancer, and shortly thereafter, the site was affected by a large fire.
Derek and Suzanne Gray, who currently operate Fantasy Island, have expressed ambitious plans for the new venture. The Grays are expected to introduce new attractions to the site, expanding the appeal of the funfair. The local council has offered its support for the project, with the aim of having the new attractions ready by the summer.
Barry Palmer, Canvey Island’s Independent councillor for regeneration and economic growth, commented on the plans: “They’re eager to open for the summer, and I know they have been developing ideas for the site. The new plot provides them with the space they need to realize their vision. The council has agreed to a two-year lease at a reasonable rate to help them get started, with a planned adjustment to the cost once the business is fully operational.”
The Grays, who also own several local businesses, including the Monico Pub and Jimmy Mac’s Restaurant, are known for their dedication to the local community and have big plans for the expansion.
Castle Point Council and the Grays were unavailable for immediate comment.
