Universal Studios has confirmed the long-awaited expansion of its theme parks to the UK, with plans to build a massive resort just 45 minutes outside of London. The £1 billion project, which has received strong backing from political leaders including Sir Keir Starmer, is expected to generate up to £50 billion for the UK economy.
The entertainment resort, slated for construction in Bedford, will span an impressive 476 acres, equivalent to nearly 300 football pitches. Construction is set to begin next year, with a target opening date in 2031.
The park will offer a variety of attractions based on Universal’s popular film franchises, including Jurassic Park, The Simpsons, and Harry Potter. Visitors can expect themed food vendors, souvenir shops, and an array of exhilarating rides. With five other Universal Studios parks already operating around the world in locations such as Hollywood, Florida, Singapore, Beijing, and Japan, UK fans can anticipate a similar experience.
For those unfamiliar with Universal’s existing parks, the new UK resort promises to be a colossal entertainment destination. Among the attractions expected to make the leap from Florida’s Universal Studios is the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride. In this motion-simulation adventure, visitors join Gru and his mischievous Minions in a thrilling journey through a supervillain laboratory. The ride is a favorite among younger audiences and is expected to be a hit with families in the UK.
While it’s uncertain if the Hogwarts Express will be featured, the proximity of King’s Cross Station and the existing Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Watford raises the possibility of additional Harry Potter-themed experiences. Universal’s Escape from Gringotts ride, a thrilling underground adventure beneath a fire-breathing dragon, could also be part of the UK lineup.
Fans of The Simpsons will likely find themselves enjoying a ride based on the beloved animated series. In Florida, the Simpsons Ride offers an indoor simulated rollercoaster experience, and a similar attraction is anticipated in the UK. The ride’s fast-paced, over-the-top adventure is a favorite among visitors of all ages.
For those looking for a less intense experience, the MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack attraction, which combines interactive shooting with alien-themed thrills, could be another major draw. Guests will use laser guns to zap alien invaders and rack up points while navigating a twisting, spinning ride.
Universal’s expansion to the UK represents a significant milestone for both the company and the local economy, with the theme park expected to become a major destination for entertainment enthusiasts across Europe.
